Keys, wallet, Slacker. For a designer like Ken Onion, there’s no shortage of genius ideas, sketches, and one-offs that litter his shop. The Slacker folding knife is his personal thought experiment realized: can an attractive, low-profile knife be built around Field Strip? The answer is resounding.
In his workshop in Kaneohe, Hawaii, Ken Onion built himself a personal everyday carry. His friends loved it so much, they insisted that he bring it to CRKT for a full production line. Only slightly modified from the custom he built himself, the Slacker houses a satin-finished drop point blade between a textured aluminum handle. The checked pattern not only balances the look, it makes for solid grip amid daily grime. If it starts to slow down, Field Strip lets you restore it to perfect working order on the spot.
Ken designed the Slacker by and for himself. So naturally, we couldn’t resist.
How Field Strip Works
Field Strip technology lets you easily disassemble your knife for cleaning without tools. To disassemble, close the knife, push the front release lever up. Then spin the rear release wheel clockwise—once you feel the handle release, pull it up and away. Handle and blade come apart easily. To bring the knife back together, place the blade and handle into the closed position—press and hold the pivot. Once the pivot is seated correctly, rotate the release wheel counter-clockwise until snug. Push front lever down. The knife is restored to full working order.

Customers say
Customers like the blade quality and ease of field stripping of the knife. They mention it’s razor-sharp, easy to hone and resharpen, and is satisfied with its weight. However, some customers have reported that the blade is stiff and the opening mechanism is very stiff. They also dislike the flipper ease. Opinions are mixed on the build quality.
